I’ve been following Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff for quite some time. I’ve always been fascinated by his level of foresight and leadership. Benioff is an innovator in every sense of the word. When he founded Salesforce, selling software online was unheard of, as was selling software on a subscription basis. In other words, he completely disrupted the traditional software industry.
But Benioff wasn’t just a disruptor in the software industry, he’s also been pushing business in general to operate with a purpose. He’s a champion in the area of Good Business. Benioff set the bar with the implementation of the 1–1–1 model, through which they donate 1% of their equity, 1% of employee time, and 1% of their product to improve communities around the world.
The impact that Salesforce has created is extremely impressive, and this can largely be credited to the culture of purpose that they have instilled in the workplace. Every employee receives 7 days during each fiscal year, dedicated to volunteering, with each of the top 100 volunteers awarded a $10,000 grant to donate to the nonprofit of their choice. Since their founding, Salesforce has awarded over $128 million in grants, 1.6 million hours of community service, and provided product donations for more than 29,000 nonprofits and higher education institutions.
“I realized that I didn’t have to make a choice between doing business and doing good. I could align these two values and strive to succeed at both simultaneously” — Marc Benioff
Benioff built Salesforce on a foundation of “Ohana”, a Hawaiian term that translates to family. Because of this foundation, Salesforce supports and encourages their employees, and all other stakeholders. Salesforce employees share common values of Trust, Transparency, Equality, Wellness and Fun, which has created a culture and energy that is contagious.
The positive impact that Salesforce is responsible for is inspiring, and a number of companies are joining forces, and spreading the word about Pledge 1%. Around 2,000 companies have joined Pledge 1% since its inception, and this number is growing as companies challenge others to join the movement through the #PledgeItForward campaign.
As members of the Upside Foundation, and Pledge 1%, Porpoise is proud of Salesforce and the company we keep. At Porpoise, our mission is to work with companies to take their employee engagement and social responsibility programs to new heights while making the world a better place.
